Walkscore helps you find walkable places to live

Walkscore is one of the most unique real estate Google Maps mashups I've come across. From WalkScore's "How it Works" section: "..Walk Score helps people find walkable places to live. Walk Score calculates the walkability of an address by locating nearby stores, restaurants, schools, parks, etc.." For an example of WalkScore in action take a look at this example query for 88 Bedford Street, New York... In this case the Bedford Street address scores a 100/100 for it's plentiful access to grocery stores, restaurants, coffee shops and other amenities. Click the drop down boxes to view the business names under each category. Walkscore's title tag says it best: "Walk Score helps home buyers and renters find houses and apartments in great neighborhoods." (US Only)

Well, my walk score is only 23, but I still live in a great neighborhood. That website's fine if you define great solely by whether you can walk to an overpriced neighborhood grocer or coffee shop. What about affordable houses with decent yards and good schools? Cars are not evil.

my walk score in my Chicago neighborhood is 92, and neither my grocery store nor coffee shop are overpriced. my yard -- lincoln park and lake michigan with a 20-mile lakefront trail -- beats any half-acre suburban private yard, and the local schools are great. and i actually save quite a bit of money since i don't have to own a car.

cars themselves may not be evil, but the policies that have sacrificed walkability in favor of driving and the pollution cars create are indeed evil. communities should be designed around people, not cars. and transportation should be designed to get *people* where they're going, not to simply move cars.

My walk score is 22… I was rather upset with it. And I was surprised to know that there is another score called drive score to evaluate my house. I found the way to calculate it online at Fizber site (http://drivescore.fizber.com/). I’ve got much better results – 44.

I've visited Drive score and now I find it really convinient tool. I've also found on Fizber.com a service Climate Watch which allows homebuyers to check what the climate is like in another town or city all year round before they move there. That's cool!
