New Google Maps feature: "My Maps" (Build your own maps mashup)

: My Maps (New!)

Today is a huge day for the Google Maps mashup ecosystem!

Google has just released a new Google Maps feature called "My Maps" which will allows users to easily create a Google Maps mashup with a few clicks, right from Google Maps! You can reach My Maps by visiting http://maps.google.com then look for the new "My Maps" tab on the left side. My Maps is being launched for Google Maps in the US, UK, Canada, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Japan and Australia.

My Maps has an easy to use interface that will allow you to:
  • Annotate points on a Google Map with text, photos, or YouTube/Google Videos (even HTML for further customization)
  • Draw lines and shapes to show routes and regions
  • View maps created in My Maps on Google Earth
  • Search for businesses on Google Maps and add them to My Maps

Google users can share the map with other users privately by email or choose to make their maps public, which will then be accessible through Google Maps search, along with maps shared by other web sites in the KML format. Maps you have created (and viewed) can be conveniently managed from a control panel when signed into your Google account.

Go on.. Get mapping!

This is great stuff Mike. You can add Singapore to the countries supported by My Maps. Here's one I created earlier:

A nice addition from Google for 'Web Users' rather than 'Web Programmers'.
Now everyone can be a cartographer.

That's great news! I just tried it for India. It works there too. Only problem is after I save the map in satellite mode and then click on ->My Maps -->Map name, it zooms back in to the highest level where it says "we do not have imagery at this level".

When I copy the map link to the address bar it opens the map in map mode instead of satellite mode.

I think thats pretty cool. Seems a bit close to Grapheety.com

They do some things nicely. However they still don't unify things perfectly, the search is awkward, no ratings, or comments... i guess in time though.

I soooo wish I could just save driving directions from My Saved Locations (which are also now two points on My Maps) without having to manually draw in the lines. Does anyone know if this is in the works as a future feature?

I think the coolest thing is pulling user-created geodata into search. It's a shame that they aren't linking back to the authors of the data like they would for bloggers. Hope they change that.

Two features I would really like to see are the ability to make the placemarker titles permanently visible and the ability to add text to the map. This is especially important for printed maps.
