Real stories about real people trying to get on Google Maps

Update (Jan.27/07): Photos of the Google plane passing over Sydeny are now available.. See below!

The Sydney Morning Herald chronicles the Australia Day Sydney Google Maps flyover in a series of news articles and blog posts. Google sent an airplane over the city Friday to take aerial photos that, if clear enough, will be included on Google Maps. Google encouraged Sydneysiders to come out and show their spirit during the event and these stories and photos will show you what was happening on the ground:

Google's Sydney flyover - This post from the Sydney Morning Herald "Mashup Blog" includes many photos of people trying to be included in the photo shoot.

Oh dear - looks like Google stuffed up (or rather didn't set expectations). The wind was from the wrong direction and so the Sydney airport flight path was right where the plane wanted to go. The flight path won and most of Sydney was not covered, and the parts that were were at the wrong times.

Update: apparently it all went wrong - prevailing winds forced planes taking off Sydney airportto climb over the eastern suburbs, preventing Google's plane from doing the planned course over south of the harbour and getting late everywhere, if at all:

The photos have been released. Some good ones of Circular Quay and parts of Macquarie Street. In Google's words "Australia Day is over, but the hi-resolution photography we took in Sydney Harbour during the celebrations is now live on our site. As you may know, Sydney was the first city Google chose to undertake an initiative like this at such a grand scale. While we couldn’t reach everywhere we’d hoped, we captured some great imagery and want to thank everyone who participated for helping make this celebration so much fun. We hope you’ll take a look, explore and re-live the day with us". Examples: Circular Quay, Helicopter.
