Big news: African continent gets Google Maps roads and streets

I noticed this comment on my world mashups post last today:

..So I decided to check in on the continent of Africa to see if I noticed anything different. Starting with the country of South Africa here is what I saw:

I noticed that there is now street and road maps for South Africa! It looks as though Johannesburg has street level maps while the city of Cape Town reveals major routes and unmarked secondary streets.

Throughout the rest of the continent countries like Kenya, Nigeria, and Egypt (to name just a few) all show major routes while some countries contain street level mapping for major cities. Here is a list of the known locations. (Know of more? Please post a comment at the bottom to let me know and I'll update the list):

Placename searching on Google Maps also seems to work. For example - search for any of the above on Google Maps and it will plot that place on the map. For the most part, if you see the town or city labelled on the map, it can be searched, but streets and specific addresses within each of these places can't be plotted yet. I also haven't confirmed if these updates are available in the Google Maps API yet. Does anyone know? If so, sites like Wikimapia will improve for the African region. This latest update will make satellite sightseeing more relevant with cities, towns and roads in place to help you identify imagery you are viewing! :)

For note this brings the street and road mapped Google Maps "world" to: Japan, US, Canada, UK & Ireland, Most countries in Europe (excluding some Eastern European countries and including Moscow, Russia), Australia, New Zealand and Brazil. Explore Google Maps to view these places..

Hey - Google maps of Africa is great news! Some of the roads are a little on the fictitious side in the more rmeote areas - but just having some roads is a HUGE step forward!

One thing puzzles me though - I've got Google maps of Africa on my website, Expert Africa, including, for example, a map of Botswana’s Okavango Delta ... however ... if I press the map page I don't get any maps of roads or towns on that.

It's all very positive, but all very puzzling!

Hi

Thanks a lot for this news, I have been searching like mad the last few days to finds out anything about google maps and SA. Any more news on this will be much appreciated. Do you know how long before the entire SA will have address search?

Cheers

Hi Francois,

Yes, It's pretty exciting! I'm never sure on any feature (street maps, address search or geocoding) until it's live to the world.. :)

Cheers!
Mike.

African maps are not available for API pages. If you host your mashup in GooglePages without a key you get them. Example.

This is very good news and very helpful.

At times we have been around in Africa and not a clue where to go and whom to ask.

Hope that children in Africa will soon have more easy access to the internet to learn about their own ome countries and continent.

It looks like the API (2) doesn't have support for African streets yet. Anybody know when they will be available via the API?

Thanks to everyone for helping with the API question! :) Esa's comments will help those looking to use this in the form of a mashup prior to it being available in the API..

Mike.

Hi,

I found very detailed street level data in the North-African cities:
- Algiers
- Cairo
- Tripoli
- Rabat
- Tunis

Looking at the copyrights it is probably data from the company AND (www.and.com).

Hey,
Good news about the African maps! Google maps is finaly starting to get the world covered. I just hope they will start adding more detail for Turkey (besides Istanbul and Ankara) and the Middle East?
