A recent post on the Google Maps API Blog indicated that you can now display an "Overview" map in your Google Maps mashups using Version 2 of the API. Google appears to now be using this feature on Google Local. Take a look, and you'll see the collapsible map in the bottom right corner of the screen. The overview pane helps you when re-centering the map and to know where you are when closely zoomed into a particular area. For note, UK, Japan and North American Google Local sites all have deployed this. [Thanks to Ted for the tip!]

Google Maps now displaying overview map pane
