Google announces improved imagery for Google Maps!

The Official Google Blog contains a very interesting post that describes some upgrades that should get all Google Maps buffs excited - improved zoom levels and imagery that matches with Google Earth! Here is an excerpt:

"..We're always trying to improve the imagery in Google Earth and Google Local, but our latest update is bigger than usual. Not only have we added extensive 6-inch imagery for many parts of the U.K., but we've updated the Google Local database to match the coverage we have in Google Earth, and (drum roll, please) ... we've added two more zoom levels in Google Local's Satellite mode! Now for many areas around the world you can see a lot more detail than you could before. (read the entire post)

Note: This change does not seem to have affected API sites or "mashups" (Thanks to Tagzania) Be sure to check my list of "Collections" sites that organize links to Google Maps
satellite views for you.

Have fun rediscovering Google Maps!

(Special thanks to Kevin Fitzpatrick and James Turnbull (Google Sightseeing) for tipping me off on this news!)

At last I can see my Sydney home on google maps. And according to the image of the Chatswood station it looks like a pretty recent image (it's been around 6 months since the building next to it have been demolished).
It even recognizes places like "Ulladulla Australia" correctly, but not smaller spots like "Pretty Beach".

New vistas not shown thru the API, and not appearing in external mashups so far... I suppose that an update will come soon.

tagzania - I wouldn't hold my breath, we have had different maps in the API for a long time now, and google has given no indication of bringing them together.

still no street maps for australia, only satellite imagery.

this is despite these maps being digitally available from multiple sources.

eg: just do a search in whitepages.com.au

pity, given that the original development team was australian.

I'd say this is in part motivated by Microsoft's beta of their competing product. As much as I hate to say anything positive about Microsoft, and as much as we all know how inferior their satellite imagery is (the widely known USGS base), the "Bird's Eye" view they have for some bigger cities is quite something (and most notably unrivaled by Google Maps in every respect), to the point of raising privacy concerns: http://local.live.com/
Their adress placement is somewhat inaccurate though. Searching for adresses I know often gets me results that are easily off by one or two houses...

I discovered that you can use the new imagery through the API!

I put together a mashup to demonstrate it:

Anyway, the secret is .... :)

Just in case you are not aware of this - you can lookup Australian street addresses and see them on Google Maps at:
http://www.jamesmcardle.com/wiki/tiki-page.php?pageName=Aus+Addresses

Looks like he's still using the older API and so doesn't get the new images yet.

Of course it's not the same as Google Maps themself but still it's nice to be able to lookup some extra Ozzy place names.

As far as I'm aware, the Google Maps team is located in Darling Harbour in Sydney.

I am trying to populate a world map with dots to highlight 700 factory locations using city and country names stored in excel. Does Google have software which would allow me to do that
