Maps!Frappr has emerged as a unique user-driven application for Google Maps. The Frappr service provides a free Google Maps "canvas" for groups or enthusiasts of a certain topic to plot their locations and people have really taken to the concept.
I recently asked the gang at Frappr to submit a list of the most unique Frappr maps to date. Here is what they have come up with:
http://www.frappr.com/twit - Just because they managed to fit almost 9,000 people on a single Google Map!
http://www.frappr.com/slashdot - Because its an empty map... Slashdot can do better!
http://www.frappr.com/gamesdevhouses - Where to find game development houses around your neighborhood
http://www.frappr.com/flickies - Flickr + Frappr?
http://www.frappr.com/targetstores - Maybe there is some business possibilities here? =)
http://www.frappr.com/famous - Map of celebrities and their photos =P
http://www.frappr.com/knownterroristactivitiesorattacks - A little spooky, terror activities.
Do you know of a cool Frappr Map? If so, post a comment and let others know!

So how is this new?
Perhaps I'm missing something here but all this seems to do is plot the geographic locations of members of a group or something people are interested in.
It would seem to me that maybe if people also posted email addresses and links to their websites that this might have some value for social networking. But right now, I don't get it.
Can someone explain --politely-- why this is so "cool." I'd really like to know (and I'm not being sarcastic here).

It's "cool" because of how easy it is. Our guild in an online game decided we wanted to know where everyone lived and who lived near who so they started a message board thread. After seeing this I thought of frappr and 15 minutes later we had a map being created instead of a huge thread to dig through.
