New layout and features on Google Maps

I'm noticing a few changes when I visit the Google Maps site today. First, the map centers around my present location (by ip address presumably). The map is also right-justified, leaving room for the left column to display results from Google Local. Is anyone else seeing this? Overall it seems that there is a tighter integration with features previously only accessible from Google Local, and not from the main Google Maps site.

Take a look: North America, UK, and Japan

My view:

UPDATE: Google Maps update may affect mashups:

It seems as though the update by Google might be affecting some Google Maps mashups which are in use on the web. Here is a comment that was entered on this earlier post:

"...Mike, not only did I notice it, but the changes they made have wrought havoc on CommunityWalk. It has errors everywhere now. The changes do not mesh well with the prototype javascript framework used extensively in Ruby on Rails. They really need to make it possible for developers to choose not to upgrade to more recent versions of an API!"

Is anyone else seeing their Google Maps integrations or mashups being affected by this Google Maps update?

They really need to make it possible for developers to choose not to upgrade to more recent versions of an API!

I'm not terribly impressed. It feels much less intuitive.

I wonder why the change was made? The Local meshing is one theory, but I wonder if people were not realizing how to search for things.

The "NYC subway hack" subway map is broken today: http://www.onnyturf.com/subwaymap.php

There is a temporary fix posted on the Google Maps API group that I used to get CommunityWalk back up and running. A response from Bret Taylor follows as well.

This fix lets you revert back to the previous version of the API until you can get back up and running with the new version.

Thanks for keeping us posted Jared. Since the URL you posted trailed off the posting, I've made a tinyurl re-direct for folks to use:

IP Location? A split into a What and Where box format? Sounds a lot like Virtual Earth if you ask me.

The new Google Map layout is dissappointing and annoying. If memory serves me right Maps.google.com use to give you diretions on the right side of the screen rather than the left, but more importantly you could close the directions if you wanted to and expand the map to take up the entire screen. This is no longer possible as Maps.google.com does not allow you to close the directions section any longer. The best one can achieve is use of 2/3 of the screen for the map the rest of the space is dedictated to directions or advertising. I hope Google reconsiders

Mike - I do not think it uses IP address but rather past searches. When I visited the site it directed me to my father's house in Iowa.

Centered on Tulsa OK.

I have a fixed IP with a Calif. ISP FWIW.

My maps worked fine in Firefox but I was told the polylines were not drawing in IE. I found that it was the dynamic map sizing that was causing the problem and attributed it to the most recent Microsoft patches but maybe it was something in the API although my sizing is done in CSS. I had to edit all of my map pages and changed to a fixed size map.

For some reason the google maps API provides a different map than the one on google local to see this look at the area around San Francisco.

Though it may be that they update the maps for one before the other, around 5AM Pacific, API sites gave me this, and this , where google local gave me this was on google local, notice how the 101 is missing a flyover, and different streets are yellow, (specially noticiable in the South of Market district)
